The Tito Puente Memorial

New York, NY

The Tito Puente Memorial is set to honor the legendary musician Tito Puente,
the Puerto Rican musician known as the “king of mambo”. This commemorative
monument will be located on the eastern half of the Duke Ellington Circle at the
intersection of Fifth Avenue and 110th Street, providing a fitting tribute to the
vibrant legacy of a man who left an indelible mark on the world of music.

The monument will consist of a mosaic pedestal and a bronze figurative
sculpture, designed to capture the essence of Tito Puente’s life and career. The
pedestal will feature a series of mosaics, each illustrating pivotal moments that
shaped Tito Puente’s illustrious career. These mosaics will not only highlight
key events but also depict the people and places that influenced and were
influenced by Puente.

Atop the intricately designed pedestal will stand a seven-foot bronze statue of
Tito Puente, depicted in his iconic pose playing the timbales. This representation
will capture the dynamic energy and passion that Puente brought to his
performances, making it an enduring symbol of his contributions to the musical
world. The statue aims to immortalize the vibrancy and rhythm that Tito Puente
embodied.

Surrounding the base of the main sculpture, smaller bronze figures of individual
musicians will be featured, representing those whose careers were directly
inspired by Tito Puente. These figures serve as a testament to Puente’s profound
impact he had on fellow musicians. By including these elements, the monument
not only celebrates Puente’s achievements but also acknowledges the ripple
effect of his work on the music community.

The Tito Puente Memorial is more than just a tribute to an individual; it is
a celebration of a cultural icon whose influence transcended genres and
generations. Through this project, Armand Corporation and NYCEDC aim to
preserve the memory of Tito Puente, ensuring that his legacy continues to
resonate throughout the vibrant community he so profoundly impacted.
